The Great War, 1964

Rene Magritte placed images next to each other and used them many times in different combinations. The apple, the wall and the anonimous  bowler hat man are combined withoud having a mutual relation. The work of Magritte was not meant to be symbolic although it often shows similarities. His work was seen as the perfect reproduction of the inexprlicible quality of dreams and therefor it was seen as surrealistic.
